For parents, especially those who care about the education and morals of children, the challenges of disciplining children so as not to be addicted to gadgets are very relevant. Then how is Islam, as a comprehensive guide to life, providing solutions to this phenomenon?

Before discussing the solution, it is better to understand the negative impact of the use of excessive gadgets on children. A study shows that too long screen exposure can cause various problems. Psychologically, children can also lose the willingness to interact socially directly, experience delays in language development, and difficulty focusing on learning. Meanwhile, from a religious perspective, the time that should be used for worship, learning or interacting with family, can be wasted just to pursue pseudo entertainment in cyberspace.

In Islam, children are a mandate from Allah SWT. Parents have a big responsibility to educate and guide them to grow into a pious and useful person. Rasulullah SAW said:

Every time you are a leader, and every leader will be held accountable for his leadership. A man is a leader for his family, and he will be held accountable for them.“(HR. Bukhari and Muslim).

This hadith confirms that parents are leaders in the household and are required to maintain and educate their children as well as possible. This includes protecting them from destructive things, one of which is the dangers of excessive gadgets.

Disciplining children from gadgets is not an easy matter, it takes patience, consistency and in -depth understanding. Here are some strategies that can be applied based on Islamic values:

Example of parents

God’s messenger (may peace over it) is the best example of humanity. So in the family, the parent main example for his children. If parents themselves are fixed on the gadget, it will be difficult for them to ask their children to limit their use. Start with yourself. Reduce the time to play gadgets in front of children, and divert attention to direct interaction, reading books, or religious activities.

Effective communication and education

Talk to children openly about the dangers of excessive gadgets. Use language that is easily understood by them. Explain why it is important to limit the screen time, and what are the benefits if they reduce the use of gadgets. Rasulullah SAW said: “Easy and don’t complicate, give good news and don’t make them run away.“(HR. Bukhari and Muslim). This principle teaches us to communicate gently and provide understanding, not by coercion or threats.

Time limits and clear rules

Determine clear rules regarding the time to use gadgets. For example, set gadget-free hours, such as when eating, studying, and before going to sleep. Involve children in compiling this rule so that they feel they have responsibility. Make a mutual agreement and consequences if the rules are violated. Discipline is part of Islamic teachings, such as prayers that have certain times.

Alternative activities that are positive and productive

Replace the time playing gadgets with more useful activities. Invite children to read the Koran and hadith to fill spare time, as an effort to get closer to the source of religious knowledge. Also invite children to learn religion by following studies, reading Islamic books or memorizing prayers. Parents can also invite children to be creative such as drawing, writing or making handicrafts. Or doing outdoor activities such as playing to train physical and social abilities. Also involve children in matters of homework, so that they know responsibility and can be more independent.

Almighty Allah says: “And when you finish your business, then do other things. And only for God you expect.“(Surah Al Insyirah: 7-8). This verse teaches us to always be productive and fill time with useful things.

Supervision and active involvement

Parents must actively supervise the content accessed by children in the gadget. Use parental supervision features if possible. However, what is more important is the involvement of parents in children’s lives. Invite them to speak, listen to their complaints, and be friends for them. Emotional closeness will make the child more easily directed.

Prayer and tawakal

In addition to the outward effort, don’t forget the power of prayer. Ask Allah SWT so that children are given guidance and strength to stay away from things that are destructive. After trying as much as possible, leave the results to God.

Educating children in the digital age is a challenge. But if you still hold fast to the teachings of religion, armed with patience, exemplary and effective communication. Parents can certainly guide children to become an intelligent generation, noble character, and avoid the dangers of excessive gadgets.
